Friedrich Hayek Joins Ayn Rand as a Hypocritical User of Medicare, September 30, 2011

38. Gaucho Texas
September 30th, 2011 2:00 pm

Talking about (Austrian) externalities and free-market economists, let me paste this from The Nation regarding the Kock Brothers, Prof. Hayek and Ponzicare:

"Soon after taking over as president, Koch invited Hayek to serve as the Institute for Humane Studies’s “distinguished senior scholar” in preparation for its first conference on Austrian economics, to be held in June 1974.

Hayek initially declined Koch’s offer. In a letter to IHS secretary Kenneth Templeton Jr., dated June 16, 1973, Hayek explains that he underwent gall bladder surgery in Austria earlier that year, which only heightened his fear of “the problems (and costs) of falling ill away from home.” (Thanks to waves of progressive reforms, postwar Austria had near universal healthcare and robust social insurance plans that Hayek would have been eligible for.)

IHS vice president George Pearson (who later became a top Koch Industries executive) responded three weeks later, conceding that it was all but impossible to arrange affordable private medical insurance for Hayek in the United States. However, thanks to research by Yale Brozen, a libertarian economist at the University of Chicago, Pearson happily reported that “social security was passed at the University of Chicago while you [Hayek] were there in 1951. You had an option of being in the program. If you so elected at that time, you may be entitled to coverage now.”

Social Security Trust Fund Data

Five Social Security Non-Myths

Greg Anrig has written a great, succinct myth-busting piece on Social Security. Here are the five main points in a nutshell:

1. Social Security didn’t create the deficit.

2. Social Security benefits are earned; reducing them amounts to confiscation.

3. Social Security is funded until 2037.

4. The trust fund is invested in bonds, the most secure investment in the world. To suggest that the trust fund wouldn’t pay is blatant fear-mongering.

5. Social Security is an easy fix.

Here's your most vapid --- and insulting --- quote of the day. On labor day, no less:

“My view is that the Republican claim that ‘job-killing regulation’ is a redundancy is as ridiculous as the left-wing view that ‘job-killing regulation’ is an oxymoron,” said Cass Sunstein, head of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. “Both are silly political claims that have no place in a serious discussion.”

I guess that makes him juuuust right.

Except, you know, it doesn't. Republicans do claim that all regulation is job-killing because they are greedy bastards who don't care much about their fellow man. But I don't know of even one "left-winger" who believes that regulations never kill jobs. Indeed, it's ridiculous. Some regulations kill jobs. Some regulations create jobs. Often, they do both. You'd have to bedead not to be aware of the costs to certain people in any change. At least the left gives a damn about what happens to people who lose their jobs for whatever reason and would offer them some kind of compensation. The right calls them freeloaders and moochers and tells them to get a job at McDonalds.

And anyway, the "silly" political argument in all this is the mind-boggling notion that compromising with these wingnuts and industrial polluters on a few discreet issues like the Clean Air rules is going to buy you another term. Talk about not having a place in a serious discussion ...

Running Windows on a Mac

"Take Control of Running Windows on a Mac, Fifth Edition” kicks off by helping you figure out which version of Windows you should run (XP, Vista, or 7) and which virtualization software makes sense for you (Parallels Desktop 6, VMware Fusion 3, or VirtualBox 4) or whether you should dual-boot with Apple’s Boot Camp. Next up, Joe helps you round up the necessary hardware and software, and make any obligatory preparations. Mid-way through the ebook, you’ll be making it all work right with hardware drivers installed, printers printing, anti-virus software patrolling the perimeter, and so forth. Before you finish, you’ll know how to share files between Mac and Windows installations, enjoy the snazzy new features in the latest versions of Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion, create functional backups of your Windows installation, and generally get on with your life while using Windows.

Questions answered in the ebook include:

* What are 13 things that you can do in Windows, but not on the Mac?
* How can I get a copy of Windows that will work on a Mac?
* How can I set things up so that Windows won’t bog down my Mac’s
backups?
* How should I handle partitioning for my Windows installation?
* How can I avoid or handle activation hassles?
* What’s the best way to right-click in Windows?
* How do I make my Bluetooth devices work in Windows?
* What is FAT32, and why might it matter to me?
* What are the coolest new features in Parallels Desktop 6?
* Is VirtualBox 4 a serious contender in the world of virtualization?

Obama Fulfills Promise To End Iraq War As GOP Wants Endless Engagement, Sat, Oct 22, 2011

The Liberal Curmudgeon
Liberal commentary that attempts to make sense out of the mess we're in.

President Obama fulfilled a campaign promise by announcing that the troops will come home from Iraq by the end of the year. Lawrence O’Donnell recounts the terrible costs of the war, based on false premises of WMD: for Americans, 4,482 lives, 32,213 wounded, 1,146 amputees; for Iraqis, over 100,000 casualties. The Republicans are filled with misgivings at the announcement. Herman Cain wouldn’t have told the enemy about the withdrawal; presumably 39,000 troops could withdraw in secret, with the Iraqi government also kept in the dark and given no time to prepare. Mitt Romney decries Obama’s “astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition,” without specifying how he would do so, if ever. Rick Perry echoes this point. John McCain criticizes this “strategic victory for our enemies." When would the Republicans think is the right time to withdraw and under what circumstances? None of the statements clarify that–and none mention the cost of continuing operations, for all of the GOP's talk about cutting the deficit. Rachel Maddow joins O'Donnell to point out that the Republicans didn’t complain when George Bush negotiated this very withdrawal timeline with the Iraqi government.
